The Planner Didn’t Give Me Peace: How Giving My Day Direction Helped Me Take Control of My Life
The Planner Didn’t Give Me Peace. Giving My Day Direction Did.
For the last several days, I’ve been using the planner I created consistently. And something clicked for me. I originally thought the biggest transformation would be that I was finally becoming more organized. That I would wake up, write down my to-do list, check things off, and somehow become this perfectly disciplined woman who had figured out how to make every hour of the day productive. But that’s not really what’s happening. What I’m finding is something much simpler—and honestly, much deeper.
I’m finding peace in giving my day direction. And that realization made me look at my planner completely differently.
It Was Never Really About the Planner
The planner is a tool. That's it. It can't make me get up. It can't make me follow through. It can't make me stop procrastinating. It can't make me be more patient with my children. It can't make me take better care of myself. It can't make me work on my business. And it definitely can't make me become the woman I keep saying I want to become.
I have to do that.
What the planner can do is give all of those intentions somewhere to go. It gives me a place to take the things swirling around in my head and turn them into something I can actually see. And I think that's where the peace is coming from. Before I started consistently using my planner, I didn't necessarily lack things I wanted to accomplish.
I lacked direction.
I had things I wanted to do, people who needed me, business ideas, personal goals, household responsibilities, things I wanted to learn, things I wanted to change—and somehow they all existed in my head at the same time. That is an exhausting way to live.
I Wasn't Lazy. I Was Overwhelmed.
This is something I've had to be honest with myself about. There were times when I called myself lazy because I wasn't doing everything I knew I needed to do. But looking back, I don't think laziness was always the problem. Sometimes I was overwhelmed. Sometimes I didn't know where to start. Sometimes I was trying to hold an entire day's worth of responsibilities in my head without actually giving myself a system to manage them.
And when everything feels important, it's easy to do nothing. Not because you don't care. But because you don't know what deserves your attention first. That's what giving my day direction has started to change for me. I don't have to accomplish everything today. I just need to know:
What matters today?
Direction Has Changed How I Experience My Days
One of the most unexpected things I've noticed isn't even about my business. It's my family. When I have a better idea of what I'm doing with my time, I'm less likely to feel like my entire day is chasing me. And when I don't feel like I'm constantly chasing the clock, I have more room to actually be present. We've made homemade pizzas. We've played a few rounds of games. My kids have gotten to enjoy their nighttime personal care routines without everything feeling rushed. And I've noticed something in myself, too.
I'm more patient. Not perfect. Let's be clear. 😂 But better. And that matters to me. Because the goal was never to become a woman who could check off every box on a planner. The goal was to become a woman who could create a life that felt better to live.
I’m Learning That Structure Can Actually Feel Like Freedom
I used to think structure meant putting myself in a box. Now I'm realizing the right kind of structure actually gives me more freedom. When I know what needs to get done, I don't have to spend all day thinking about what needs to get done. When I plan my priorities, I don't have to constantly make the decision again. When I make space for myself, my family, my business, my health, my finances, and my goals, I'm not just filling out boxes.
I'm telling myself: These things matter to me. And that is a powerful thing. Because you can say you want more money. You can say you want to grow your business. You can say you want to get healthier. You can say you want better relationships. You can say you want more peace. But eventually, your life has to reflect those desires.
You have to give them somewhere to live.
Maybe You Don't Need More Motivation
This is probably the biggest lesson I'm taking from this experience so far. Maybe I don't need to wake up every morning feeling motivated. Maybe I don't need to become a completely different person overnight. Maybe I just need a system that helps me keep showing up as the person I'm trying to become. That's what I'm really creating with this planner. Not a magic pill. Not a promise that your life will suddenly become perfect. Not another pretty planner that gets abandoned three weeks into January. 😂
I'm creating the system I needed. A place to slow down. A place to decide what matters. A place to make a plan. A place to check in with myself. A place to track the things I'm working toward. A place to reflect when things don't go according to plan. And most importantly, a place to begin again.
I Think That's What Taking Control of Your Life Really Looks Like
It doesn't always look glamorous. Sometimes it looks like sitting at your desk and figuring out what actually needs to happen today. Sometimes it looks like writing down your priorities instead of keeping them in your head. Sometimes it looks like admitting that the way you've been doing things isn't working. Sometimes it looks like planning dinner so you aren't overwhelmed at 6 PM. Sometimes it looks like making time for your kids. Sometimes it looks like finally working on the business you've been talking about. Sometimes it looks like looking at your finances instead of avoiding them. Sometimes it looks like putting your phone down. Sometimes it looks like going to bed because tomorrow needs a better version of you.
And sometimes... it's just deciding that you're done letting your days happen to you.
That's where I am. I'm getting serious about my life. Not because I have everything figured out. I don't. I'm still learning. I'm still adjusting. I'm still figuring out what works and what doesn't. But I'm finally giving myself a system to do it intentionally. And maybe that's the real transformation.
The planner didn't take control of my life. I decided I wanted to.
The planner just gave me somewhere to start. And right now, I'm finding a surprising amount of peace in that.
A Note for the Woman Who Feels Like She's Behind
If you've been feeling overwhelmed, unmotivated, scattered, or frustrated with yourself lately, I want you to know something: You don't have to fix your entire life tomorrow. You don't need a perfect morning routine. You don't need to wake up at 5 AM. You don't need to accomplish 27 things before noon.
Start by giving tomorrow a direction.
Ask yourself:
What matters most?
What would make tomorrow feel successful?
What do I need to make space for?
Then give yourself a way to follow through. Because sometimes taking control of your life doesn't begin with a huge life-changing decision. Sometimes it begins with a blank page... and the decision to finally write down where you're going.
Ready to give your days some direction?
You don't need to have your whole life figured out. You just need somewhere to start.
